Experience
Susie has more than 40 years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of speech and language difficulties. She has been in private practice since 1989, working exclusively with children. She treats the full spectrum of communication deficits, from singular issues (such as difficulty saying the “r” sound) to more complex situations where there are multiple diagnoses (e.g. learning disabilities, attention deficits, hearing differences, intellectual limitations, autism, memory issues, stuttering, social interaction challenges, etc.).
Prior to going into private practice, Susie was employed at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Oregon, where she worked in Acute Care, the Rehabilitation Institute of Oregon, and the Children’s Neuropsychiatric Unit. In both in-patient and out-patient settings, Susie worked with a multi-disciplinary team of professionals in the treatment of stroke and head-injury patients, as well as complex pediatric clients. In addition, she provided augmentative communication services for non-speaking patients and dysphagia treatment for individuals experiencing swallowing problems.
Before joining Good Samaritan Hospital, Susie was on the staff at Waverly Children’s Home, where she taught severely disabled students in the residential treatment program. And, prior to her time at Waverly, she worked with both adult stroke patients and young communicatively impaired children at the Portland Center for Hearing and Speech.
Susie received her Bachelor’s degree in speech pathology and audiology, with honors, from the University of Oregon and her Master’s in speech pathology from the University of Michigan.
Susie received her Certificate of Clinical Competence (C.C.C.) from the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) and has her license to practice in the State of Oregon. She is a member of ASHA and the Oregon Speech and Hearing Association. Susie received the Outstanding Clinician Award for 2016 from the Oregon Speech and Hearing Association.
Susie and her husband, Jim, have one grown son (and two cats!). In addition to enjoying being a parent, Susie also enjoys traveling, gardening, skiing, reading, volunteering with SMART, and spending time with her friends.
